Beyond the Classroom

The lessons we learn outside the classroom are equally important to the ones we learn inside the classroom.

Project Compassion

During Lent we raise money for Project Compassion. This huge fundraising effort benefits Caritas Australia, an international organisation charity that helps local and overseas communities in supporting themselves in long term sustainable ways. This includes the building of wells in drought ridden countries, art projects for Indigenous communities, and providing support for individuals and families affected by HIV and Aids in different parts of Africa.

A wide variety of fundraising events and activities are held by students at Catherine McAuley School as part of Project Compassion. Within Religious Education classes, as part of their Religious Education program, focus is spent on where the money raised during Project Compassion goes, the many issues that people in different parts of the world face which lead to poverty and injustice, and how our efforts are linked to the Gospels and the work of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy.

Student Leadership

Catherine McAuley School has a Student Leadership group, allowing student the opportunity to develop their leadership skill and empowering student voice.

Sports

All students take part in sporting programs as a part of their school day. As the children at Catherine McAuley School move through the Middle and Upper Primary age group, they are given opportunities to represent the school in full day sports carnivals. Participation in these carnivals helps the students to develop valuable life skills such as cooperation, discipline, respect and sportsmanship.

We welcome the involvement of parents as we work in partnership to represent Catherine McAuley School as a proud school community.

Tournament of the Minds

Tournament of Minds is an academic competition focusing on collaborative problem solving and critical thinking. It is open to both primary and secondary students in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and a number of other locations in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Your child can work through their Passport to Learning to develop a variety of skills in all sorts of locations!

School Choir

The School Choir performs at a number of different events including the Catholic Schools Music Festival at the Festival Theatre.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a literacy engagement program that was introduced by the Premier in 2004 to:

  •       Encourage students to read more books and enjoy reading
  •       Improve literacy levels.

The Challenge requires students to read 12 books between the beginning of the school year and early September.

Play-based Learning

We know that creative activity is an integral part of your child’s emotional, social, physical and intellectual development. Your child will be given the opportunity to explore their creative potential through play and will be encouraged to become an independent learner.

Creative activity stimulates a child’s use of language to explain their play and to develop and absorb the language around them during creative activity. Children are able to come to terms with their environment while stimulating eagerness to learn, curiosity in the world around them and creativity.

Music Tutoring

We engage with a range of experienced music tutors. There are opportunities for your child to to learn piano, drums, guitar and singing.

Music lessons, incorporating music theory and harmonies, are run during school time. These lessons are taught by private tutors for a reasonable cost. Payment for tuition fees are made by the parents directly to the tutor.
