Homework
Homework is an integral aspect of study.
We believe that by the time children leave primary school they should have developed good study habits. Not only does it help to develop the discipline of application, but it helps to prepare children for the large volume of regular homework set at secondary school.
The quantity and type of homework set is flexible and can vary, but the following time allocation is a guide.
Reception: No formal homework. Parents are encouraged to read to their children. When children start reading themselves, it is appropriate that parents listen to them as well. Children may also engage at home with letter sounds and sight words.
Year 1: Reading – children to parents Occasional informal research. Letter sounds and sight words
Year 2: Approx. 15 minutes – reading, Learning words, finishing work if necessary.
Year 3: Approx. 20 minutes – reading. Learning times-tables, spelling lists and finishing work.
Year 4: Approx. 20-30 minutes, including reading
Year 5: 40 minutes, including reading
Year 6: 45 minutes, including reading
Year 7: 50 minutes, including reading
LOTE: Completing unfinished work. Occasional research project
In order to develop sound habits for the future and to reinforce what is being done in class, it is important that homework becomes a regular activity.
Generally, homework is not set for the weekends.
